And the default altitude is the lowest for terrain clearance and proper east/west rule with no regard for winds. At least, I think that is it.

Gotcha. The original post was about removing winds from the flight calculation but turned into an altitude discussion and fix; just wondering how the original question was addressed. So it seems to me that the only way to remove winds from the calculation will still be to slide the slider on the altitude screen, unless you're saying that winds are not applied until/unless I view the altitude screen. I still would like a button on the flight plan screen that toggles "Winds Included/Winds Excluded" for when I'm planning a flight a week out and the current wind data is useless to me. The default altitude and no winds would suffice, and there would be no reason to even go to the altitude screen until closer to flight time when winds data becomes meaningful. But I'll save that argument for a later time. ;)

I see Jeff, so you want to be able to retain Altitude settings, but just ignore winds, right? If so, then sliding the time bar all the way to the right is the way to do this. Right now tapping the Winds info at bottom takes you to altitude planning form; instead, perhaps it should pop a menu with two options:

[x] Enable Winds Impact <== tap this to toggle them on/off
=> Altitude/Winds Planning form

And/Or I could/should also make is so that dragging the Time Bar all the way to the left-side *also* disables winds (so either extreme). This would make this feature easier to discover.

I like the "either extreme" option. I'm also willing to bet that the majority of people don't know the "Estimates include winds" text is a link, and instead use More Options/Altitude Planning. So my thought is to turn the clickable link into a button that takes you nowhere, it just toggles whether or not the winds are included in the calculations (the same as sliding the slider to either extreme). The button text could toggle between "With Winds" and "Without Winds" or some such. Android phone screenshot attached:
