I love the idea of double-tapping to set it (kinda like cruise control in a car). I think you should set your threshold somewhere in Setup (I think I'd always do 100 feet). I think flashing or a gentle ding would be fine, but an alert just like you get for "time to descend", traffic, or entering an airspace would be just fine too.
