I fly a lot of VFR cross country flights in an aircraft that doesn't have an autopilot and never will. I do use flight following a lot.

Around here, ATC sometimes gives me "altitude at my discretion", but more often then not when flight following, they ask me to declare my desired cruise altitude (odd/even number of thousand MSL + 500 depending on magnetic course).

It would be super nice to be able to touch a button and say "maintain current pressure altitude", and then have iFly GPS alert you if you deviate by more than 100 feet, until you cancel. The feature should know when you are flying from high to low pressure, etc, from the METAR data acquired from the ADS-B input.

There are other apps (and instruments) out there with this functionality. See, for example, Never miss an altitude assignment with the AltitudeAlert app - iPad Pilot News .

If you're flying a flight plan, and have the alitude set, then I believe the "VST" (Vertical Speed to Target) instrument does what you want. It will pop into existence (in a yellow color by default) if your altitude needs to change up/down to get to your target altitude, and tell you how many feet per minute you need to ascend or descend to get to your set altitude. (Including when you're approaching your next landing and need to get down to pattern altitude. I keep it next to my "Vert Speed" instrument so I can compare what it's asking for to what I'm actually doing.)

What I don't know is how far away from your target altitude you have to be before it's triggered.

You can use it in conjunction with the "Target Alt" instrument, which shows just the target altitude for the leg you're on. You can also use that instrument to quickly change/set that altitude by tapping on it.

Yeah, I don't think the VSI will really address his request.  It only pops if the required vertical speed is greater than a certain threshold.  I think the threshold is 100 fpm, so for it to pop up any time you deviate in altitude by more than 100', you'd have to have a flight plan full of waypoints no more than 1 minute apart.  (You'd also have to be constantly looking for that instrument to appear,  If you're that religious about scanning your tablet, but can't be bothered to look at your altimeter, then I'd suggest there are problems going on there that iFly can't solve... :-)  )

Maybe if you could just double-tap the "indicated altitude" instrument to enable altitude drift alerting (more than 100 feet) and double-tap again to disable it that would be easy to use.,,, have the instrument border thicken or change color to indicate that you are have drift alerting enabled. Seems like it should be easy to do.

That would be a great feature!
