This is such a useful feature, can it be somehow set to "Always" show extended runways on destination or DirectTo? Then the option when getting close could be to turn all or non-preferred off?
Hi unnamed poster:
Although that's an interesting idea, it would always show two runways as a minimum. (At a one runway strip.) Where I fly, there are a lot of multi-runway airports. (Sometimes that includes an obscure dirt crosswind runway.) If all the Runway Extensions automatically came on, that could clutter things up a bunch. (And too, where I fly, one runway is often dedicated as the "Calm Wind" runway. It's probably asking iFly to do too much to know which is the preferred, calm wind runway. And/or to take a METAR into account and suggest a runway into the wind - when the locals might still using the calm wind one.)
You suggested the option for the Extensions come on automatically and that the user turns selected runways off afterward. Since some user interaction would be necessary your way anyway, I submit that it's simpler/easier to simply select the runway you want as you approach your destination. (And even if iFly allowed you to "pin" the runway you wanted ahead of time in your Flight Plan (so to automatically pop up on approach), you don't know what the winds will be when you arrive.)
FWIW, I agree w/ you that Runway Extensions are a useful feature. I, personally, have found that it helps me plan pattern entries from 5 miles out and find the right runway when approaching unfamiliar airports with multiple, closely oriented runways. (E.g., Rwy 22 and 27.)
