OK: Went flying yesterday, about 20 minutes each way. Clock, GPS and everything was working just fine. I will ignore the blip, but will keep an eye on it. See you at Sun 'n Fun,

I might have seen something similar twice, separated by a couple of months. Each time it showed no gps lock and no satellites. I tried reset, warm start, cold start and factory reset with no luck. I noticed each time (early in the diagnosis... 5 minutes or so) that the clock showed 2 to 4 hours off from the correct time (not an even hour amount either). The first time I just turned it off until I got home, got on the internet and reloaded the software which fixed it. The last time I left it off about 30 minutes and then repowered it inflight and it worked.

Don't know if the cause of no satellite reception was the time error or the satellite reception caused the time error. It would sure be nice to understand the failure mode and appropriate fix for it inflight.

There are so many variables that can affect the GPS lock, it's very hard to know the cause of a sporadic loss of signal. However, here are a few tips:

1) An important part of a GPS lock is the "Almanac". The Almanac is is a database with info on the satelites, trajectory, general health of the network, etc. The Almanac is part of the GPS feed, and all GPSes automatically download this data anytime you are receiving a GPS signal. If you're GPS has been turned off for a couple weeks, you may need a new Almanac, I suggest you power up your iFly 30 minutes before flight and just let it sit there and get refreshed.

2) Here is some background on the different Reset options:

- "Warm Start" or "Hot Start" (available from the GPS Diagnostics app)- forces lock to re aquire, but will use last known position. If all else fails, try the Hot Start option in flight.

- "Reset GPS" or "Cold Start" - this will cause the GPS to forget any cached information about your position and start from scratch getting a lock. It also verifies accuracy of current almanac. You should not do this in flight, as aquiring a lock while in motion is a LOT more difficult than getting a lock while stationary.

- "Factory Reset" - this causes the Alamnac and last known position to be flushed. It could take 20 minutes to reaquire. You should not do this in flight either.

3) Low voltage, RF noise, shielding, etc, can affect the lock. If you have an external antenna try repositioning that. If your lock doesn't return in a minute or two, try the Hot Start option.

4) If you are having this issue and don't have an external antenna, you should consider getting one. Or get an ADSB device, then you have weather and a backup GPS receiver.

Hope this helps a little,

Walter

Took a ride down to Bayport (23N) and everything was fine. I always check the clock before takeoff for reference.

Left 23N, going east and found the clock was again off by at least 2 hrs. Landed HVN and shut down for about an hour; after start-up, clock was still wrong.

720, remote GPS antenna stuck to horizontal window at top, full view of the universe.

When I turned on my '720 this morning, I immediately exited the iFly software to check the time and date, and while the clock was correct, the date was off by one week. After about 30 seconds the date corrected itself and I went on to see normal performance of the weather and other functions.

My question is: does the iFly 720 have an internal clock or is the time and date completely dependent on the GPS data? If it has an internal clock, is there maybe a small button battery that is going dead? I have never had the date and time wrong on my old '700 and only within the last month or so on my '720.
