I use a Nexus 7 and RAM mount attached to the left side of the windshield. That works well in the SkyCatchers I fly, but I would like to try something slightly larger. A full sized tablet is just too big. It sounds like the Surface 3 might not be powerful enough and the Surface Pro 3 is too large. That brings me to the IPad Mini 3. I have never owned an Apple device and really like Android, but the IPad Mini 3 just for flying might be the way to go. It also works with the SkyGuard transceiver that I have. I think the IPad Mini is about 1 inch larger than the Nexus 7.

I don't have a date yet for our Windows version...but threads like this certainly move it further up the todo list.

It's an interesting marketing problem. Probably it's either a home run or a total flop. If there's are attractive and small Windows tablets that appear, you guys could be the tall dogs in a growing market. But I think the emergence of the market is really controlled first by the available hardware. You're not going to discuss your marketing strategy in public here of course, but I would like to be a mouse in the corner to hear it!

When the SP3 was introduced there were rumors that a Surface Pro Mini had been in development but was killed. More current rumors have it possibly coming this fall. It would be interesting to be a mouse in the corner for those marketing discussion as well.

Re Surface 3 vs Surface Pro 3, I tried an Atom processor-based Lenovo Tablet 2 just to see how I liked working with a current-technology Windows tablet. What I found was that the Atom was barely adequate for even just web browsing. Slow scrolling, missed gestures, etc. Since I wanted a single Windows machine for everything I do, this low performance level was just not acceptable.

The Lenovo Tablet 2 uses a Bay Trail duel core Atom while the Surface 3 uses the newer Cherry Trail quad core. The Surface 3 is about 2x the performance of the Lenovo on the 3DMark Icestorm test and around 25% faster on Jscript processing. You might find the Surface 3 works pretty well in most consumer non-gaming applications -- or not. YMMV.

Interesting about the non-pro.

When I looked at Atom tablets, all of their performance numbers were pretty much identical, so I did not look again when selecting the sp3.

Anything happening on development of a Windows version of iFly GPS? I'm now considering a Microsoft Pro 4 to replace my HP G62 laptop. It would be great if it could run iFly GPS, mostly for armchair flying.
