No worries Jeff,

I just wanted to make sure we did not mislead anyone.

so the basic answer is that without ie it can't be done and I'm stuck with the usb.

What is the likely problem with the updating here? Am I doing something wrong?

I may be a little simple minded here, but why not install IE, download and install ifly connect, then uninstall IE. Then you could use ifly connect without having IE on your computer.

The main reason is that IE is a pretty pervasive program that is pretty hard to get rid of. Once gone its not something to put back. Windows has enough issues that adding another can of worms isn't worth the trouble. I'll just keep downloading for a few hours and hoping it will work.....than trying again til it does. I fly for fun and don't normally go too far so I don't need to update all the sectionals all the time but its a bit painful when I need to update the ones I use. The WAC charts don't help with that issue either....
