It seems the iFly units are more geared towards aircraft owners who know that they have a power source. I ferry aircraft quite a bit and don't always have that luxury. The external battery is great while it remains charged, but once it's dead the gps is useless to me for the rest of a "ferry" day (don't have to time to charge it on fuel stops). Perhaps you could come up with an adapter that can be plugged into the unit that gets its power from AA batteries. Again, just me, but I'd pay good money for an adapter like that.
Or an internal battery ;)
I still love the 700 though and am sure the 720 will be just as good.
Hi Ben - I'm clear how an internal battery would address your stated problem. Are you aware you can charge the external battery while in flight? Just plug the battery into the cig ligher, and the iFly into the battery. And here is a AA based battery pack I've used before, although it has half the life of an iFly battery pack: http://www.survivalunlimited.com/sola...
Cig lighter to battery mounted remotely (which has a very usefull on/off switch) to iFly (which is lighter and thus easier to keep still on a mount without an internal bat) and you've got a winning combo.
I too was hesitant about an internal battery but this does work very well and you don't have to worry about the useful life of the battery rendering the unit limited as battery ages. Lighter weight is a very big plus when using suction cup mount.
