it is my understanding, and I hope someone corrects me if I'm wrong, the only difference between the 700 and 720 is the price and hardware features. WiFi, different screen technology, very small internal battery, and maybe some others. The actual operation and software are both identical. So once they release whatever software revision contains portrait mode, both units will have the feature.

Mike, that is generally correct - the core navigation app on the 700 and 720 are the same. However the 720 does have more memory and an upgraded CPU which will make some future features work a lot better on the 720 - such as synthetic vision. But today the navigation app performs very fluidly on both platforms, so not much benefit to the faster processor. Another difference is the WiFi update capability which doesn't exist on the 700. Just touch a button and you get a list of all the new stuff, touch the "install" button and everything is download and installed. (If you are in a hurry you can pick specific things you want to get).

But the biggest benefit is the sunlight readable screen. I went flying with one of our customers in his RV yesterday with his 720, the sun was blazing down, and the iFly looked beautiful in that environment. Viewing the screen at numerous angles was effortless.

Portrait mode is coming, and we plan to support both iFly 700 and 720 platforms when we release that feature. (Note, my standard caveat: please don't hold me to specific feature comments and dates...until it's done and released, feature plans may change)

Yes. That's the problem though. Some of the aircraft I ferry have an inop cig lighter (not often, but when it's discovered it puts a damper on my mood). Thanks for the link though. That might prove a useful backup.

Although a battery would be helpful I can't help but think of the numerous auto gps's I have had. They all had batteries and after about 6 months of use the battery was pretty much a waste. Leaving the gps plugged in all the time does little to cycle the battery and after a while the life of said battery is down to 10 or 15 minutes if that.

I like the idea of a battery back up but would probably only use it in line to the iFly on an IMC flight. For vfr flights I would just have it pre charged and handy if needed.

I am planning for an avionic upgrade in the next year and have already told the shop I want a panel connection for the iFly so it is on the avionics switch and to eliminate the cord to the 12V power socket which is always it seems on the co-pilot side.
