When I get an alert from the 740b I like the audio alerts, but it also pops up a box that makes me acknowledge or inhibit the alert.  The problem is that the box covers the display, so I can't see the alerted issue on the map!  I spend precious seconds futzing with the screen to make the box go away so I can see the map again.  This is especially a problem with traffic.  I'd like to be able to glance at the map to see the traffic or obstacle's relative position while scanning visually for them.

Is there a way to turn off this annoying pop-up box?  If not I may have to turn off the alerts and just rely on looking more often at the screen for the traffic and obstacles nearby.  That would be a shame.  Can't there just be a text scroll at the top or bottom of the screen about the alert, that doesn't block the map and automatically disappears when the threat passes?  Or at least have an option for audio alerts only, or  to just pop up the box for one second and then have it go away.  I think it's a terrible interface decision to make the alerting cover the display that shows the threats, and require pilot intervention to make it go away while you are trying to locate and deal with the threat.  It just blows stress and pilot workload through the roof.

Under Settings->Alerts and Warnings->Airspace Alerts->Alert Modes there are settable options for all different airspace types.

Options are

  • No Alert
  • Show Message
  • Show Button

The messge is the pain-in-the-ass, but there is no audio only option.  The button option only shows a small indicator on the screen and if you touch the button you get the message.  Touching Acknowledge on the message is the fastest way to close the form.  Covered on p.31 of the documentation.

That's for airspace alerts.  Where is the similar setting for traffic and obstructions?  I don't think it's there.

If you can't get the alert form (as the manual calls it) not to show, that's a serious interface design defect.  The last thing that I want when I get a traffic alert and can't immediately spot the traffic is to have to go heads-down with my GPS and hit buttons to see the screen where the traffic target is displayed!  At the very least there needs to be a modes setting like there is for airspace, for traffic/obstacle/terrain alerts.  This is a safety issue.

I brought this up in a different forum, and found out that the Alert Form can be moved, and when you move it subsequent Alert Forms will open in that location.  So, you could move it to one of the corners of the display and it would be out of central part of the screen, until you can cancel it.
