Just spoke with Scott from Dallas Avionics and was told there will be a 2 stage fix for my 600 EXP ADS-B Navworx unit.

Stage one will be a software upgrade that will change the SIL from a 3 to a 1. That should be available in a week or two and is a short term improvement.

Stage two will be hardware costing $299 and is a "small box the size of a cigarette pack" that will go in between the main cable and the Navworx unit. That will be available in September.

We have until January, according to FAA, to get it all sorted out.

Thanks, John, for the info ----- I have the EXP in my RV-6A, (along with 2 othe RV owners at my airport) --- my unit works great and I have (2) 100% OK reports from the FAA.------ looking forward to the new box.

Not to interested in the SIL change to 1. I think that indicates that the position source is unapproved and eliminates traffic signal back to you. . Might be interested in the new box if it is an approved position source.

I have a good test also, but if you read the AD inits entirity the FAA says that test is not a complete engineering test. 

 

They are concerned that the unit doesn have a way to know if the satellite it is using has malfuntioned. They say the Navworx could be off in location more than .2 NM.

Stay tuned to the Dallas Avionics site for the issuance of Phase one of the fix. Namely the sofware upgrade. Then the availability of the hardware.

I believe SIL will go to 0 when it is all over.

 Thanks John for the info.  I also have  the 600 EXP  and a couple of  100% reports  and agree that the  disagreement   between the FAA and Navwox is in the  ability of the device to  detect a bad  position  data point and  as result may place the position source in error. But I actually believe that no one  including navworx has tested the  device to see if or not it meets that criteria.  That is based on a couple of  FAA replys in the AD.  IF  that detection  shortfall could be cleared with the FAA then they may still have that " meets performance" hurdle to clear.   I would however hope that with software change and possibly  additional testing the  600EXP  could legally  be  moved back up the the SIL 3 bracket along with the other  products of this  type.  I believe an  SIL  = 3  will be where it needs to be inorder to be competive for the long run and be a 2020 compliance solution.   I think that  anything less than an SIL =3 will not be considered  compliance  in  the  C and  B  airspace.
