I have a 4-place experimental with a bare panel. No radio, intercom, nav, or transponder. I've been breaking it in with a hand held iCom radio and an iFly 700. The panel is large, like a Cessna 172, so space is not at a premium.

I am ready to build a permanent avionics set. I am a VFR pilot. No need for hard IFR. I intend to equip with ADS-B In/Out and I want all the related bells and whistles (traffic, weather, FIS-B, 1090ES capable). I want the ADS-B solution to integrate smoothly with an iFly 740.

I would like to have an AHRS feed for the iFly as well, but that is not a hard requirement. I do want:

- Mode S Transponder

- ADS-B In/Out with 1090ES, traffic, weather, FIS-B

- 4-place intercom

- Radio that allows listening on two frequencies.

- iFly 740

Can I acheive my wish for under $6,000? What would you build?

What I've looked at:

Radios: PS Engineering PAR200 Audio System; Garmin GTX 200 (2-place intercom only)

Transponders: Lynx NGT9000 (budget buster, but way cool); Sandia STX 360; Garmin GTX 327; Sandia STX 165

ADS-B: NavWorx ADS600-EXP; SkyGuardTWX Vision-Pro Plus ADS-B Transceiver

Bruce --- I have an RV-6A, currently re-building the radio stack for IFR --- however, I think I am doing some of what you are planning, and will make a couple of comments. If you go with a NavWorx 600EXP, you will have a compliant 2020 ADS-B sytem that will talk to your iFly 740 (as I have). You will not need an expensive Mode S transponder. If you have a newer digital transponder and encoder (I am using a new Garmin 327 and getting my encoder from my Dynon D10A) , the Navworx will hook up, either through serial or using their Transmonde pickup.

I won't comment on the radios, or intercoms, as there are several out there that will meet your requirements and probably keep you in the 6K range.

Have fun!

Here are the packages I have outlined. The Sandia packages may not have all the antenna required. The STX 360 is a bit of a crap shoot as it is not yet available. Only the VisonPro offers built in AHRS, hence the iLevil included in the other packages. I am strongly tempted to go with a used Garmin GTX 327 instead of the STX 165 to get a better user interface.

These are hardware costs only, no installation included.

Package 1
PAR200A NAV/COM $2,300
Lynx NGT9000 Transponder $6,800
iLevil Sport $772
Avionics Bus $50
$9,922
Package 2
PAR200A NAV/COM $2,300
Sandia STX360 Transponder $3,500
iLevil Sport $772
Avionics Bus $50
$6,622
Package 3
PAR200A NAV/COM $2,300
Sandia STX 165 Transponder $1,628
ACK 30.5 Encoder $213
NavWorx ADS600-EXP ADS-B $1,819
iLevil Sport $772
Avionics Bus $50
$6,782
Package 4
PAR200A NAV/COM $2,300
Sandia STX 165 Transponder $1,628
ACK 30.5 Encoder $213
SkyGuardTWX Vision-Pro Plus ADS-B $1,899
GARMIN GA 35 TSO'D WAAS GPS ANTENNA $309
Delta POP 978 MHZ UAT Antenna (2) $140
RAMI AV-22 TRANSPONDER ANTENNA $65
Avionics Bus $50
$6,604

Bruce ---IMHO I do not believe Pkg 2 or 4 will give you 2020 compliant ADS-B. I know the Skyguard is not currently 2020 compliant. I am not familiar with the Sandia 360, but unless it meets (not necessarily have) TSO requirements for a position source and altitude reporting, it won't be compliant. The Navworx unit includes a WAAS GPS position source. That Lynx unit really looks good, but a really big hunk of AMUs (aviation monetary unit -- 1 AMU = $1000.00).

Stratus plans to launch the ESG 'this spring'. The ESG is a 2020 compliant transponder with built in ADS-B out and WAAS-GPS. Sporty's accepts pre-orders, MSRP is $3,499.
