I am noticing that at the moment  KPLU is indicating a red weather symbol indicating IFR due to 2 miles visibility.  KPLU is Class G airspace up to 700ft AGL, it is technically in Class iG Airspace and so VFR only requires 1 mile and clear of clouds.  It appears that the Red (IFR), Blue (Marginal), and Green (VFR) dots are based soley on 3 miles and 1000 ft ceilings without regard for the actual airspace surrounding the airport. Do the weather dots come from Iflygps or Nexrad, or where?

It is the pilots responsibility to understand and .meet the required minimums, an not rely on technology.  But I was just wondering

I'm going to make a guess that they're basing the weather evaluation on the definitions in this:

From here: https://www.faa.gov/news/safety_briefing/2015/media/SE_Topic_15_02.pdf , and no doubt other sources.

I assume and hope Mike is correct. Most of us don't plan to simply make touch and go's at a class G airport when we are checking the weather. We plan to go somewhere.

Mike is correct. But also remember that the reported airport conditions are the most recent METAR, not what the AWOS is reporting right now.
