Hey all...

I'm planning to replace my Garmin 496 with an iFly 740b.  Currently my 496 drives my autopilot, so I want to retain that functionality with the iFly unit.  My question:

To avoid having to re-run wires, and since the existing harness plugs into my servos currently, can I simply snip the end off the proprietary connector on the 496 cable and run the wires into a 9 pin connector to connect to the 9pin-to-USB adapter that iFly sells?  I think all the iFly needs is the black (ground) and blue (data out) wires from the following 496 cable schematic:

Obviously I will disable the power wire and run a separate DC wire to the iFLY through the breaker currently used by the 496.  Am I missing something, or should it be just that simple?  I understand the basics, but I'm not a wiring expert.  I do have an expert to assist and based on my description he thinks this should work and be the easiest way to get things up and going.

Your theory sounds good, the iFly unit only needs pin 3 for data out and pin 5 for ground on a USB-to-serial interface. But, Garmin likes proprietary data formats, so what works for Garmin won't always work for everyone else. What autopilot are you using? That'll help me give a definitive answer.

Thank you. According to the installation guide for the TruTrak, the Garmin's serial Data Out 1 goes to pin 17 on the AP, which is where pin 3 from the iFly serial interface needs to go. Going from pin 3 to the blue wire should work as long as pin 5 goes to a common ground, and the black wire might work for that.
