I finally got a chance to use the iFly app in the air today. Overall: I'm very impressed. However, I fly out of an airport that's got some high terrain (2000-4000') to one side (about 15 mi. away). And because I was motoring around at 1500-2000, iFly's terrain warning was flashing almost all the time and I had to keep acknowledging popup alert boxes. But here's the thing: 1) I wasn't even flying towards the terrain a lot of the time it was flashing at me; 2) the airspeed of my current plane is 70 mph, so even if I were flying that direction and bent on self-destruction, it would take me almost 15 minutes to pancake myself into said terrain. I had the Terrain Highlights Settings set to the lowest radius (25 nm), and Alert Thresholds was set to the default (Moderate) -- which I just now changed to Relaxed, and maybe that'll help. But can I suggest that terrain warnings should not occur unless the terrain is in the direction of travel? And could we set it to warn us based on minutes-until-intercept? E.g. Warn me if I'm heading *towards* the terrain and within X minutes of getting there. Or at least let me set the radius to less than 25 NM. Or, alternatively, let me set the radius to X *minutes* instead of *miles*. As it is, terrain warnings proved to be more of a distraction than a help. Thanks.

Are you sure it was warning you of the distant terrain? I often get "terrain, terrain!" calls from my iFly when I'm flying the pattern at an airport that's not in the active iFly flight plan (i.e., when it doesn't know I'm intentionally landing and thinks I'm just flying too low).

Yes, it was flashing red the terrain that was a long distance from my aircraft. BTW, I was not on a flight plan, just flying around.

Terrain flashes everywhere if you're near or below it, regardless of whether you're on track to hit it. (It's only the Alerts that are a function of time or distance.) You can set the outer limits of what flashes to 25, 50 or 100 nm, but I leave ours at unlimited. (There are times on flights where I've needed to look ahead on a 300 mile trip to see when I need to climb, and at 150+ kts, that's sometimes only an hour away.)

Having said that, the Profile View is smart, in that it only shows "terrain" that you'll hit for the course that you're one. (Can get interesting as you're weaving thru mountain passes.)

Ergo is correct on stating that alerts should only be triggered for terrain that is X minutes ahead of you (and it is time based, not miles).

You can make the terrain flashing itself less distracting by changing it's mode:

Menu => Setup => Alerts/Warnings => Terrain Alerts => Map Highlights => Mode => Solid

And you can also decrease opacity too, from this menu.

Hopefully "Relaxed" settings work better for you as well.

If you are getting the Pop-up Alert box for Terrain, this should only occur for terrain in front of your, or if you are flying too low.

Also, having a flight plan that at least lists your Airport in it, may also reduce the warnings when you are within 1 mile of that airport.
