Actually, it reads “at least six months’ service as a qualified operator in a shipboard station of the United States.”

"Re KML, sorry I wasn't clear. KML is the native format for Google Earth files. Just double-click the attached file in the email and GE should pop up and show all. I know that KML can represent postion, time, and altitude. Not sure about airspeed or ETA, but these could be in the text part of the message if the KML syntax doesn't give them a home."

There are apps on the web that can get extract and display all that info really pretty looking (except airspeed) on google maps from above or horizontal profile out of the .log file iFly generates (at least the one I see it generate on iFly 720 and I assume is generated in iFly iPad).

Yeah, no guarantees no matter how many safety devices you carry. ;-) My understanding is that with the older ELTs the successful activation rate was significantly less than 60%. But we seem to agree that a bit of extra possible insurance in the form of iFly squirting out data now and then could be convenient or even lifesaving.... and considering the probably low cost of implementing it, seems a shame not to.

In the meantime I've been using Apple's "Find My Friends" app which allows my wife or anyone I've given permission to track me while flying. The main caveat is the same as if this suggestion were implemented in iFly: If you're flying out of cell phone reception the iPad or iPhone you're flying with has no way to get it's location out to the viewer/tracker. In short, it's only as good as the cellphone coverage of the cellular data plan your ipad or iphone is subscribed to. Other is, that unlike this suggestion it does not automatically at ANY interval send out it's location. The viewer must get on their Find My Friends app and essential ask it "where is he now."

When I originally posted this suggestion I wrote, in part ---

"It would be nice to have a Send Location feature .... Even just GPS coordinates.... For both social and potential emergency uses."

In the meantime, if you're flying with an iPad or iPhone and your spouse or friend has an iPad , iMac, or iPhone , here's a bit of an alternative:

There's a free iPad and iPhone app called Find My Friends that allows persons you've selected to track the location of your flying iPad or iPhone.
I've tested it in flight.
Of corse it can Only find you when your iPad or iPhone is in cellular reception (as would my proposed iFly mod). When it can't it reports last known location and time.
Unfortunately, unless you tracked it earlier you would not know last known speed , direction, altitude.
But it' free, and let,s my wife and selected friends track me in flight far better than what the could before...which was "not at all. :-)

I understand there may be similar apps for android, and may be dome that can track an iPad/iPhone in flight this imperfect yet useful way... And some that may allow your authorized tracker to do so on any internet connected computer..not just from an iPhone or iPad.

Anyone tried one of those.. Or this findmyfriends that I'm using?

(When noting the limitations of these compared to devices like Spot or a true PLB, note that thse options require no subscriptions snd (if you're already flying with an iPad or iPhone) new hardware.)

Good idea, I'll pass this along to Walter and we'll discuss it. On a phone or network connected tablet it would be fairly reliable. On the 700/720/520 it would be more ch less useful until you were connected to a network or other means of outbound com.

We can easily hook into the email. I'll put this on the wish list and run it by the development team, thanks for the feedback.

Yahoo!
It would not be a full substitute for Spot, InReach, or a true 604 ELT....But would be useful, possibly even a lifesaver, and IMO a real "value-added" feature worth mentioning in promoting iFly.
