All the points here seem to be valid and appropriate. Perhaps iFly could zoom to show the whole route, then when the little plus sign/follow aircraft symbol is clicked, return to the previous zoom level.
Or,
If one of the zoom buttons is pushed, a dialog box could appear asking if you want to return to the previous zoom level.
Or,
A new instrument could be made available that would toggle between the current zoom level and the entire route (or remainder of the route). That way on a long XC you'd be able to click and see the whole route to ensure the weather is still tolerable, no TFR's have popped up, verify you remembered to route yourself around that mountain/SUA/whatever that is on the direct route.
