Here's another way to do it.

Currently, when you clear the flight plan, what you get is a blank page with a button on it: "Set Departure Point". So you have to click a button before you can enter the departure airport.

So, again, two options for iFly when you click "Clear":

1) If you're not currently at an airport, no change in behavior: You get a blank plan with a button labeled "Set Departure Point".

2) If you're at an airport, then iFly auto-populates the departure point with the airport you're sitting at. If you don't want that airport as your departure point, you click "Opt>Change this Waypoint", and enter the airport you want. (Still one additional button press, but I think this will rarely be used.)

This approach doesn't require any changes to the user interface. (No new buttons or highlighted fields or pre-populated user input boxes.)

While it may simplify one scenero, it complicates mutliple other scenero's. How hard is it to type KALT as departure airport?

I agree that automation is only effective if it's helpful and not a hindrance. I also agree that it's not hard to enter the departure airport.

I simply question why it's necessary to manually enter the departure airport if you're currently sitting at an airport while building a flight plan. It seems like the vast majority of times that occurs, the plan is going to include the current airport as the departure point. My suggestion was to not change iFly's behavior if you're not currently sitting an an airport. My suggestion would also only require one additional button press if you didn't want the departure airport automatically populated.

Are there really multiple scenarios that would be complicated by this suggestion? What are some examples?
No, in your example, having iFly automatically populate the departure airport with your current location would not seem to be a problem.

Planned a flight using the latest beta software yesterday, and whaddya know? When I set the departure point, iFly suggested the airport I was sitting at!

It made me very happy. Thanks, AP!

Pretty cool, huh?

I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

The more iFly thinks for you and anticipates what you want (like a good O.R. nurse) the better!

(The sad reality is that when everything works slick like that, no one notices how much thought went into it.)

Okay, now that auto-detect origin is here, I'm wishing for a variation on a theme.

I was on a flight from Phx to Hou. (Non-stop, due to good tail winds.)

My pax was feeling bad about a third into the flight. We had to land early.

Once on the ground, I wanted to take my original flight plan and simply change out my original Departure airport (the first in the list) with my new, impromptu Departure airport.

I expected that iFly would auto-detect my new departure point and offer it for me when I hit "Change waypoint."

It didn't.

Would be cool if it did.
