Plates  Modified By Mark Kolber on 10/8/2014 3:14:28 AM
As a newbie to iFly GPS maybe it's something there I missed but I would like to see it be easier to get to the approach plate selected from the maps page. As far as I can tell, while I can get back to the map page from viewing a plate with one tap, it takes a minimum of 5 to get back to the plate one has been viewing. Seems pretty high workload for that phase of flight.

There are probably multiple solutions that can get to the goal from toggles to tabs to plates overlaying the map.

Edit: I see one can use the "history" tab for that purpose...

Mark,

Good question and feedback. You can usually reduce it down to 4 touches by using this method. If you are zoomed out. It might add a touch as the software will prompt you for "near touch" airports.

  1. Touch and Hold the desired airport for the "Possible Action Menu".
  2. Touch Plates and Diagrams.
  3. Touch Approach Plates
  4. Select the desired plate.

This gives me an idea to reduce it to 2-3 touches. We could presume for airports in the Plan, and if accessing Plates and Diagrams from the Low IFR chart, that you want to see a list of Approach Plates. We could also simply list Airport Diagram, a "list" of Approach Plates and then show options to access the list of Departures, Stars, etc as available.

The History shortcut usually resolves this, but it does require you to look at that plate in advance. I've got some more ideas that I'll run over with the team.

It's not the first look at an approach, SID/STAR, airport diagram, etc chart, using the sequence you describe, that I'm interested in. Going through the series of taps for that purpose is fine. It's once you know you are going to use that chart. Perhaps an example will clarify.

On an IFR flight, I will check my destination weather as early as possible so I can brief the appropriate approach when workload is low (with FIS-B weather, that can be very early, long before being able to receive ATIS/AWOS). So now I've selected the approach to use and return to the map for a current task.

It's at this point I thin the ability to go back and forth between the selected plate and the map for briefing/rebriefing/confirmation purposes becomes a great help. I think other pilots do something similar, even those still using only paper.

My apologies, I though you were talking about the initial Plate viewing as that takes 5 or so touches. Beyond that the History only takes Correct, so that is where the History option comes into play. It is two touches... History -> Approach. You are wanting a toggle from the map mode to an approach, correct.

In that case,I can think of several way to do this. We do have it on our internal development list to improve this accessing of Plates more quickly. Additionally we will be looking at showing the Plate right over the Chart or Vector mode in the future as we move to "Seamless Charts". Stay tuned.
