HUD

The GG discussion got me thinking that it would be nice/neat to have a Heads Up Display. Ideally projected onto the aircraft windscreen displaying a speed tape, altitude tape, heading/track/course tape, artificial horizon, etc.

Not as easy as you might think. You need a good projector, and you need a surface that reflects enough of the projected image back to your eyes to make it clearly visible, but does so without obstructing your forward view. Your windscreen is designed to be as transparent as it can be, so it wouldn't be good at reflecting the image.

Here's what such a system might look like: http://www.avweb.com/avwebflash/exclu...

According to their website, price is ~$5K if you've already got a Dynon system in your plane, or $6K if you don't: http://www.patavionics.com/index.php/...

Noted. We've looked into some LED style projection ideas and such, but they get very expensive and are very limited what can be displayed. It would also be even better if it was able to be a portable unit via Wi-Fi. I'm seeing some new technologies in screens, transparent displays that need no external projection. They are still in the pre-market stages but look very promising.

I was thinking it would be cool to have the basic Speed / Altitude tapes on the sides, then a partial compass w/ waypoint bug at the top or bottom. And to really trick it up, put a path of gates or boxes for navigating a route, only when you have a flight plan in place, but just show one or two gates at a time to minimize screen clutter. You could even have a popup transparent styled AH to show when you were out of a safe flight attitude, similar to our AHRS alerts.

Keep in mind it has to remain clean and uncluttered as not obstruct or distract the pilot's view. This could also be a similar approach to the GG as well, just more spread out. There is definitely some very interesting options being developed in the screen manufacturers at this time. Fun talking about future technologies, it's going to change how we see things for sure.
