As I sit here miles away from my iFly 720 trying to plan tomorrow's VFR flight to Houston, it becomes apparent how much I appreciate the 720's planning capabilities.

I wish Adventure Pilot had a flight planning version, web based, that had all the pre-flight features of the iFly. I especially like seeing the weather along the route and the vertical profile of the flight with MOA's, class C & B airspace, etc. so I can plan altitudes and routes accordingly. Having these plans stored on an iFly server and downloaded to my iFly with each update would be nice, too. IFR subscribers would see plates, etc., and VFR subscribers could see the VFR screens. It could be limited to current iFly subscribers, or as a "teaser" for other pilots to check out the iFly software. You might consider it a "gateway drug" to hooking more users on your product.

Considering AOPA's recent mis-step with replacing their online flight planner with a new version, there's definitely a discontented group of potential users who might embrace a quality flight planning tool from AP. I know I'd probably use an AP-hosted online flight planning tool.

That said, considering how much effort AOPA has (supposedly) been spending to get their new flight planning tool up to an acceptable level of quality, I worry that this could be a significant distraction from AP's primary product, and I wouldn't want that to happen!

Cobra - I was using that same "mis-step" when I was wishing I had the 720 in front of me. It just doesn't have the punch of the iFly.

Allow me to show my ignorance - I don't think they'd be a total rewrite involved in creating a web-based version; at least not in the sense of creating an iPad or Android version. Those basically require a complete re-write for new archetecture, whereas iFly is already written and running in a Windows CE environment. Plus the GPS, ADS-B, moving map, alerting, and other features important to actual flight could be stripped out. Supplement the touch screen functions with mouse/keyboard equivelents and it's basically ported to Windows. But now we've introduced the whole issue of maintaining current charts, etc. on your desktop and that's a nasty liability so the harder part is to make it run in a browser window, allowing AP to retain total control of users, charts, plates, etc.

Ed said it's a frequent topic at the water cooler, and that's great news. The FBO owner borrowed the Mooney for a flight to Michigan last week and came back bragging about the iFly (he uses a competitor on a tablet) and I know he didn't scratch the surface of the capabilities. Lord knows AP stays busy enough maintaining and enhancing what they've got, and I'm a very satisfied customer. But if Ed and the others were to keep a laptop bedside and code up a flight planning version while they slept... :)

I have a 700. I use Golden Eagle and then put into iFly. Maybe it is time to upgrade?

You guys might benefit from checking out fltplan.com. It's more oriented to light twins and jets and has a learning curve, but it is very comprehensive. The thing I like about it is that you can set up your flight plans, airplane profiles, etc. on the web using a real monitor, mouse and keyboard. Then their apps allow you to access all of that from your Android gadget or iThing, including a fairly comprehensive set of tools. All free.

I suggested to Shawn that Adventure Pilot explore an alliance with fltplan.com but apparently fltplan.com is not receptive. Too bad.

RE AP doing their own web tool I would much rather see the effort expended on the main product line. There is still lots to do before the software is totally feature competitive with FF, GP, etc.
