I was wondering if there was a reference that gives some details on what the nexrad images from ADS-B actually indicate, as coming from a skyradar receiver. In other words, what colors correspond to what dbz levels, and which descriptions (light, moderate, strong, etc.). I know not all systems use the same coding, and would like to know a bit more about it. As well, are the images composite, or base? Thanks.

ADSB Nexrad images don't provide dBz levels, instead they give you a number which represents a range. The first couple of levels they provide are virtually clear air so are ignored. The rest are converted to colors based on this table:

20-30 dBz = Green
30-40 dBz = Yellow
40-45 dBz = Orange
45-50 dBz = Red
50+ = Magenta
