I just completed a 22 hour set of flights and I got lots of messages something like "GPS Position Lost" and the screen would turn red. Sometimes if I waited like 5 minutes, the GPS position would lock on and the little airplane would be where it was supposed to be. Other times it would not come back on, and I had to pull the power plug and start over; and this entails about 4 to 5 minutes before the Nav screen is up and running. I tried to reset the SD card, but it didn't help. Also I could not update the Charts and such as I got a message saying the Update Cannot Complete.

I had the same thing happen on 26 July near Springfield MO. My Garmin GPS also lost position. We were near our refueling stop KSGF when it happened so no big deal. We powered up again 30 minutes later, all was normal again.

I've had my unit lose position on several occasions, seemingly for no reason. I've had trouble rebooting it sometimes, then sometimes it comes right back. I've been told on this forum that it could be interference within the cockpit but I haven't tested that. My screen has never turned red though.

Same here; on my recent trip to Oshkosh, I lost GPS signal twice, for no apparent reason. Both outages lasted from 10 to 15 minutes each. I checked local ATC if there were any reported outages and there were none. Same thing on the way back. No rhyme or reason as to when and where it happened.

I called support and was told that power interruption may be the cause, but I do a pretty good scan and saw no changes on the ammeter. It was also suggested that I test this in my car; I did, and again lost coverage in fairly short order. Since I was sitting in a parking lot for a while, I doodled with the unit and tried a reset (About/GPS/?) and that seemed to work.

This has been happening on and off for the past year or so. I bought my iFly 700 the first time they showed it at Sun 'n Fun (3 years or so ago?) and I love the unit and the great software updates since, but losing my confidence where I have to thread through tight airspace such as offshore the Cleveland Class B.

Thanks for the response, Ed. Just a couple of items:

1) This was not happening prior to this year;

2) In April, we moved the unit to a 1" ball mount attached to the lower right panel (where the Loran used to be ;-) To get by the sunlight problems, I moved it up to the upper part of the window, attached by a RAM clamp mount and the same 1" ball. The unit has a clear view of the upper window.

3) I was repeatedly advised that the external antenna is not needed if the 700 has a clear view of the sky. I will try the external antenna once I find it....
