Just want to start by saying I upgraded to the 720 from 700 mainly due to sunlight readability in my plane . Just the improved readability was well worth the upgrade .

However my initial experience with the wifi is a little dissapointing . I am unsure if its just my unit but the range on the wifi is far from stellar . In my home I was unable to get a connection while my girlfriend was on her wireless and I had the unit one floor below the router ( about 20 feet away). The connection would connect and drop in a continuous loop. I was able to get a solid connection only after terminating her wifi and moving into the room where my actiontec router is located . This was discovered after a good hour of messing with the wireless connection settings .

My concern is that at an FBO or other location where there is a bunch of other wifi users if i will be able to get a solid connection . It seems to me that the wireless in the ifly may have trouble competing with the other wireless units being used.Any other experiences appreciated.

This is not a deal breaker for me as I like the unit very much . I had every intention of updating via usb but like the fact that I could get the latest TFR and weather information atan FBO.

Chas

While at home I get any where from 30 kb to 130 kb, depending on time of day, using a Verizon Hotspot. But in a hotel room in Lexington, VA, using their wireless I got 350 to 430 kb. I updated everything in 29 min. The weak link is not the Ifly 720.

Thanks for the reports I will stick with USB updates and do the weather and TFR through the wireless.

We have another product that is currently being tested, a PC based update app we call "iFly GPS Updater" (name subject to change).

It works like this: 1) Put your iFly's SD card in your computer (of course, this requires an SD reader...most new computers have these built in, but you get by a USB based reader if needed). 2) Run the iFly GPS Updater. 3) The app finds everything that needs to be updated, let's you confirm, then it automatically downloads all the updates directly to the card.

This will work for both iFly 700 and 720 users, and although most folks are successfully using the 720 WiFi interface, those with compatability issues will have an excellent 2nd choice for updating their units.

Of course, the USB update procedure is always available as well.

Guys,

I find that I can still not get update from webs sites that require a password. It recognizes that there is a wifi connection available but I am unable to imput the security key or password to proceed. Hopefully version 7 will address this.
