I didn't pay real close attention previously when I used it. It was certainly satisfactory before. I did notice that when I dimmed the screen, it seemed (at least in daylight) to go to completely dark, I'm not sure if it did that before.. I did check and it wasn't in night mode. I went to the "mode" section and re-selected "day" just to be sure. I've had the unit for over a year, so unless the screen degrades over time somehow, I don't suppose there's anything wrong with it.

i probably wouldn't have mentioned it, except that the OP seemed to observe a screen not as bright as it once seemed to be.

Dear Walter,

There is an issue with screen brightness, and I can't put my fingers on it as to what is causing it. All I know, the screen was much brighter than before. I am talking about day time mode not night time. Although in the past when you chose night mode, it would dim a little bit, until you went to set up and manually dim it further. Now when you hit night mode it goes automatically to full dim and you can hardly see anything during the day, until you go into set up and brighten it. Last Sunday I flew in a perfect clear day, I fly a Bonanza not an open cokpit or an RV, or anything with bubble canopy, and I can tell you when the light hits the screen, it is not readable. I found out that I have software version 5.14. I am not sure If I can agree or not with Shane, I may try switching to 5.15 software.

I am also not saying the unit is defective, as it is less than 4 months old and hardly used. All I know is I can't fully utilize this unit due to lack of screen brightness. I have the shade, and it doesn't help much.

Best regards

Nick

Nick, sounds like you will need to ship the unit back to us. We can do some diagnostics, compare the screen with a new unit, etc. If there is a problem we will send you a replacement iFly. Please contact our support desk for details: 888-200-5129.

Thanks,
Walter

I have to agree that the screen is hard to see and could be brighter. I just bought my unit a month or two ago, and while I am very impressed with the features, I am not able to use it much in the cockpit because the screen is so hard to see. I use the velcro screen shade, but that doesn't help. Wearing darker shirts would probably help, but that shouldn't be the fix. The customer reviews of the unit that I read before purchasing indicated that the screen was easy to read even in sunlight. I don't think I have a faulty unit, and I hadn't planned on reporting this feedback, but when I saw this thread I thought I should reply with a +1 who is experiencing this issue. I am using OS v5.15.

Thanks,
Brad

I have the 5.15 update and have no issues with the brightness. My dad has an iFly that hasn't been updated, and is using version 4.XX. The brightness compared to my unit using version 5.15 is similar.

Besides the known bug (that I've never seen in 5.15) where cycling between day/night mode might not give you full brightness in day mode, I don't understand how any software change can affect the absolute performance of the screen. Once you crank up the backlight all the way, that's it. I think there are so many variables involved in the flight environment, that it's hard to compare screen brightness based on memory.

This brightness issue is purely subjective and I'm not discounting any of the posts on this thread! I just want to make sure that anyone thinking of buying an iFly doesn't hesitate because of any brightness issue that may be the exception and not the rule.

Also, I prefer the way the night mode dims, and hope it stays the way it is. Anything brighter would blind you in the cockpit if you're actually using it at night.
