Had a 6 hour VFR flight yesterday and need to make sure my sectionals were updated. Found that there was a new version so I downloaded it. Ouch. Learning new stuff while flying a plane without wing leveler or auto pilot can be a challange. First I had a hard time getting the zoom to bring me in from the whole US. Panning does not seem to work as well as it did and when you place a finger on the screen a new box may pop up with various other info. Also when I ask for "nearest" and the options come up it does not want to scroll down through them. Finally got things working well enough to have an uneventful flight.

I guess my question would be, are these problems due to the new version, something wrong with my iFly or operatior error?

Hi Dave,

Yes, there are some significant changes with v9. We have a document that goes over these changes, and we've updated our user's manual to reflect the V9 UI. You can find these under our Support / Manuals page on this website. Also we included a "Migration Guide" on the What's New message that pops when you first run v9. But, sounds like you are much like me, I don't really want to read manuals - I want the app to be intuative enough so they are not needed. And to that end we've worked hard to make sure everything is clear and easy to follow. But anytime something changes it can be a suprise. I hope after you use v9 a little bit you will appreciate the benefits of these changes. Please keep us posted. Also give that migration guide a read through, it's short & simple.

Thanks!
Walter

Just to chime in, I too had the same problem getting the whole U.S. map to let go after my first update of charts. That was with an earlier beta version of V9. I tapped zoom, and nothing happened.

(That was with GPS off, since my Nook doesn't have built in GPS and I have to use a Bluetooth Tom-Tom. I'm guessing that, if I had GPS enabled and locked, the program would have automagically jumped to the proper Sectional.)

I don't recall how I finally got off the U.S. map to my home state. But you might want to check for this behavior on a virgin vanilla install of v9.

I agree with Walter's design philosophy (possibly attributable to Steve Jobs) that products should be so intuitive, you shouldn't have to read a manual.

I just finished watching a YouTube video about some proposals for major (but good) changes to a 3D Rendering program (Blender) and the fellow quoted a book titled "Don't make me think" about good ergonomic, usable designs. One of the rules in the book was that tools shouldn't distract a user from accomplishing the desired task.

I haven't read the book, but it sounds right and I mention it if anyone at iFly is interested.

Along the lines of streamlining a UI, I suggest a "rule" that no function be more than 3 clicks away, with 2 being preferable. 2 clicks especially for emergency functions.

Hi Walter,

I did print off the Migration doc, after my flight. I had pretty much learned most of the new stuff after 6 hours. I like most of what is new. My problem mostly just seems to be lack of response to my finger. Not all screen touch systems operate the same and I suppose I just need to get used to using this one. My iPhone sometimes has the similar problem.

Thanks
