Been fighting with an intermittent signal lost issue. Happy to report 12 hours to/from Oshkosh last week and only one lost signal episode for about 20 seconds. Still have no clue what's causing this. Picked up an ILevel at Oshkosh after Shane discussed how solid the performance is with the iFly. "Worked" for about an hour of my return trip. Worked is in quotes because the radar display would often have lines through it, and would often disappear while zooming in/out. After the first hour it stopped working completely - iFly wouldn't connect with the iLevel. It would connect with my iPad, however. At one point i got a sectionalexe error - causing the unit to lock up - and had to totally reboot the system. Glad I still have XM weather. Sorry to say that I'm having nothing but issues with my iFly. When it works, it's a great little unit, but I spend way too much time inside messing with the cranky thing. I don't hear very many issues at all - guess I'm just unlucky. Once Skyview adds charts (September) the iFly more than likely will be coming out of the panel. I like the unit, and great folks to deal with; just can't get it to be reliable - a must for aviation use for me.

Jonathan,

I had some issues with my iFly 700 dropping the signal also but I spoke with Shane at Oshkosh on Wednesday and learned a a couple of tricks to try. He asked me if I had my cell phone turned on while I was flying and I and my co-pilot did have ours on. He suggested that we turn the phones off as they could impact the signal. I did buy the external antenna while at the show and used it on a 8.7 hour return trip to Mississippi and I didn't have one signal drop the whole way home. You may have already done these things but they did work for me.

Thanks for the info, Sam. I have been turning my phone to airplane mode thinking that this may be causing my lost signal. I'm almost positive it was in airplane mode for my return flight, but did not check as part of my trouble shooting. I actually ordered a new external antenna (currently panel mounted with external on glare shield) thinking my current antenna was bad. The antenna is good however, because when I disconnect it from the back, I quickly lose some signal strength. Good thing as I never received the antenna - thank you USPS...

I plan on doing a shake down flight this week to see if I can maintain connection between the iFly and iLevel, and to see if I ever lose it on the iPad (don't think I do, however I didn't have my iPad on the whole flight last week as I usually do not fly with it. Only use it for back up charts/plates).

One thing I'm considering is if beta software could be causing issues. I became an ifly owner through the purchase of an airplane and when I first updated the unit, it said that the serial number is a beta tester. I've been using the beta since. Perhaps this is causing some of my issues..?

Not everyone wants to be subjected to the problems that are usually found during beta testing, which is why you normally have to request access to those releases. It sounds like you might be happier running the production versions only...

When updating your iFly, you should be able to select the Production code instead of Beta if you desire. While you may get some of the bleeding edge changes sooner with the beta releases, it is certainly unfair to expect a bug free program -- the point of beta testing is to uncover the problems before releasing an official update.
I don't have the same hardware setup as you do, so I can't comment on your stability issues, but I do know that the iFly team works hard to correct any issues just as quickly as they come up. I also suspect that a lot of the problems that people report with the iFly connections is at least partially related to all of with wireless signals flying around in the cockpit -- bluetooth, wireless, cellphone, backup gps, adsb..... throw in a full moon, and something is bound to break...

I use my iFly for all of my missions, and wouldn't leave home without it.

Jonathan,

If you don't mind, post how your shake-down flight went. I'd be interested to hear about it.
