I have an Ercoupe with an open bubble canopy. It has a square windshield support tube running from the base of the windshield to the top of the winshield frame. I clamp onto the windshield support tube to mount the 720. This works fine except for the the mount and dismount of the 720 unit onto the end of the mount ball T-bolt. The whole mount system must be loosened enough to mount the T-bolt in the slot and then tightened enough to keep it secure and tighten and readjust the RAM arm. Then removing it at the end of the flight I must reverse the whole process. This is very cumbersome.

My previous AnywherMap GPS used a cradle that let me slip the unit in and out in seconds. I'm hoping someone has some experience using a RAM tablet holder/cradle to mount their 720/700 GPS in their plane. There are many 7" tablet and iPad Mini holder products from RAM that would fit the 720 based on the RAM published dimensions. The one that seems like the best fit is the "SMALL Tab-Tite™ Holder for 7" Screen Tablets":

www.rammount.com/CatalogResults/PartD...

You have to buy a 1" ball adapter to complete the holder/cradle:

www.rammount.com/CatalogResults/PartD...

Then you can use same yoke mount and arm that is used in the iFly yoke mount solution. Or, there is a single RAM yoke mount part number for that combo with the diamond shape 1" ball adapter if you are buying a new mount from scratch:

www.rammount.com/CatalogResults/PartD...

If you buy the cradle alone to use with your existing iFly yoke mount hardware the RAM price would be about $41 for adding the tablet holder to your existing yoke mount. The whole set with holder/cradle and yoke mount would be about $67.

Please let know about any experience you have with these RAM tablet holder/cradles in your plane or your car.

Since installing the "SMALL Tab-Tite™ Holder for 7" Screen Tablets" (www.rammount.com/CatalogResults/PartD...) in my Ercoupe, I have improved the RAM mount combo. Using the yoke clamp on the windshield support rod turned out to be a bit limited. The size of the yoke mount means it is only useable in 2 out of 4 angle positions because its long tightening screw/knob hits the windshield. The size of the clamp itself gets in the way of the top of the panel and glare shield.

I decided to try a replacement for the yoke clamp. I ordered a $15 RAM-B-231U U-Bolt Handlebar Mount (www.rammount.com/CatalogResults/PartD...). This allowed me to attach a RAM 1" ball base much lower on the windshield support rod and at any angle I wanted. I am still using the 3" extension and the tablet cradle. The installation is much more secure and right where I want it. I will take some close up pictures this weekend and post them on this thread.

The RAM 7" tablet cradle is a much better way to mount your iFly 7xx if you take it with when you leave the plane and remount for a flight.

Shane,

Here are some photos of the install with the final setup in my Ercoupe 415-C. BTW, the 720 does knock the magnetic compass way off course when it is turned on.

I'd probably position it so that it is about 12 inches or so away from the compass or reposition the compass. Even some of the handhelds and ADS-B recievers have messed with my bubble compass. They are a little twitchy.
