Just talked to ASUS tech support. Their response... since tablet's GPS and Google Map works properly with IFly app not installed, they are pointing me back to contact app provider (IfLY) to troubleshoot.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start?

Just to make sure I fully understand this situation, it goes like this:

1. Factory Reset -- Google Maps works fine.
2. Install iFly GPS -- Google Maps stops working, even if you reboot the device and don't start iFly?

If this is true, it's the first I've ever heard of such a thing.

Could you please run iFly, and do "Menu => About => Send Bug Report" so that I can see the log?

I'd also ask that you install "GPS Test" app from the Play Store, and use it to help diagnose your problem. It will show you the Satellite readouts and results.

Jerry, when GPS is disabled on a tablet, iFly will pop up a window after about 30 seconds of start up telling you that your GPS is not enabled. The window offers to enable it for you. (By taking you to Settings.)

You didn't say that you got that message. It might help Brian to troubleshoot if you can confirm that you are NOT getting a message from iFly about your GPS being off-line.

(Brian, if he's not getting that message, then iFly thinks his GPS is working. If his GPS is working but he's not getting a signal, then it sounds more like a problem witih the tablet, where CPU noise is blocking the GPS from acquiring.)

Mike, could you pm me with a some more info on cpu noise blocking GPS reception? This thread sounds a lot like the issue I was having with the Huawei Mediapad M3 last week (which I "solved" by returning same).

Just curious as I really like knowing why things work - and don't work.

Thanks!

I'm pursuing this further with ASUS. When I do a factory reset and no 3rd party apps installed, GPS works fine until I power down and then re-start...then no GPS again until I do another factory reset. Powering down loses the GPS function until I do another reset. Comments on this welcome.

I didn't see a way in the forum to PM you. But nothing really to tell. I was just making a WAG as to why the GPS wasn't working. Either the software for GPS wasn't being called, or the GPS software was working okay but the receiver wasn't getting a good signal. Interesting to hear that you had the latter problem and returned your unit. (It is amazing to me that these things work at all, with all those noisy components/transmitters crammed into the same space. I used to think a lot about where to physically put stuff on boards when I was a Design Engineer. My sense today is that they just put 'em where they put 'em, and no one really thinks ahead about the potential problems.)
