There is no standard terminology - each app is doing it's own thing. This is what our messages are, and what they mean:

1. No Heartbeat = iFly software is not getting any data from the ADSB device. This could indicate a config issue, or a problem with the WiFi connection.

2. Out of Range = iFly software is talking to the ADSB device, but the ADSB device isn't getting any data from a ground station. This could be normal (such as when you are on the ground) - but if it's happening a lot in the air, it could indicate an issue with your ADSB antenna. (Note: You may still receive air-to-air traffic data when this message is showing, but your wx data will not be updating)

3. Tower Idle = The ADSB device just recently stopped getting ground messages. This could be normal - either there isn't any new data to send, or you have descended out of range of the station. This message will change to "out of Range" after 5 minutes.

4. Receiving = All is well - iFly software is talking to the ADSB device, and the ADSB device is receiving data from the ground station.

Walter:

Still haveing heartbeat issues and Out Of Range issues. This happens mostly on descent to airports and in the pattern where it is needed most. During the "out of Range" message I can see 4-5 towers and targets so that has to be an IFLY issue.

However, today with the LG tablet in "Airpland Mode," I made it almost all the way to an airport 75 miles away before I started getting No heartbeat and disconnect from the Navworx unit which is under my seat with the wifi antenna only 12" below my tablet.

Then when taking off from that airport I couldn't get the WiFi from Navworx to connect or stay connected even though the tablet read an "excellent" signal.

However, I could connect and stay connected to my friends Stratus wifi signal even though his aircraft was 50 feet away and my tablet said his signal was "Poor."

When we got back I looked at his signal on my WiFi Analyzer app and found the Stratus is on Channel 6 and Navworx is on Channel 1. I am thinking that maybe channel 6 is a better for the electrical background noise of my cockpit.

The Navworx set up warns NOT TO CHANGE THE WIFI SETTINGS unless you contact them.

I don't understand. I can change the channels on my router in a minute.

John,

The software will continue to show the last tower locations - it takes a while for those to timeout and drop off. This may be a bug - we're looking into modifying the code so they drop off faster. And when "out of Range" you can still get air-to-air traffic, so that is normal.

Since your tablet is losing the connection to the Navworx, it sure seems like the issue is at that layer. And if your tablet works fine with other networks, it seems to be the Navworx WiFi. Have you asked them about this?

Additionally, the bug fix for iFly hasn't been released even to beta yet. The bug is that we show "Out of Range", when instead we should be showing "Idle". Out-of-Range occurs after 5 minutes of silence, which should also be synched with the time that we stop showing the towers. So the confusion is that we're falsely saying "out of range" when for those first 4 minutes we should just be showing "Idle" instead. Version 9.7 will have this bug fixed.

Brian:

Just been in contact with Bill at Navworx.

I asked if there is a way to change the WiFi channel to one with less interference. He told me to download the latest revision into the Navworx unit and it will actually seek the cleanest channel.

I will test it tomorrow.
