has anyone been able to create a backup SD card for their 740b?  i would like to create one but haven't been able to because the upload fails when loading the sectionals.  if you have been successful i would like to have the detailed description of the steps you took.

Kevin,

I have made and use a backup SD card by simply copying (all files) from a good card into a folder on my home computer and then copying them back to a new SD card (max size 32 GB). No up- or downloading needed. I use iFly Connect to update the card I keep in my truck before going to the airport and swap cards in the 740 when I get there.

Below is a link to another thread on this topic in the forum:

today i got the SD card out of my 740b today and plugged it in my desktop to update.  here is the msg i got when it failed.  the card has been working in the gps unit.  i just flew from OR to CO and back last week with it.  this is the same error msg i have been getting when i try to create a backup SD card.  stuff will be copying and then the sectionals start and it appears a new software version won't go.  i'm asking the forum because i have gotten no responses from tech support.  BTW - explorer found no errors on the SD card.  i also unchecked the SOFTWARE update box and it ran to completion, but no sectionals were updated, just weather and TFRs. so it appears i cant update without the latest sectionals software, which triggers the error msg that something is wrong with my SD and CRC {whatever that means?]

Many years ago, I was getting very strange behaviors with an SD card.  The first problem I noticed was an unexpected error during a data update that prevented the update from completing, but did not seem to affect iFly performance when the SD card was returned to the 720.  Eventually, I think I tried to format the card, and rebuild it from scratch (with help from iFly support), and in the end the AP guys suggested that it might be an issue with the card itself.

I ended up trying to rebuild the iFly dataset on a new SD card, and that worked fine.

Even though I'd been using the original card for a couple years by that point with no issue, either something on it failed or else the size of the dataset reached a point where it was trying to write to an area in the card that held a latent failure that was finally being exposed.  Either way, I retired that card and continued using the replacement.

In your case that seems unlikely, since if I understand your situation you first saw this error when trying to clone your original SD card to a new one, and now you are seeing it when trying to perform a data update on the original card, so that would mean that two different SD cards have developed an issue.

Still, it's all I can think of.

Absolutely sounds like you have a failing SD card.
