John, I also appreciate your PERSPECTIVE on the need to see and be seen while flying.  Your priorities are a valuable asset to this forum.

I have a good friend who had to cancel 3 flights on commercial airlines over a 2 decade stretch.  All 3 of those flights crashed.  Needless to say, he will NEVER fly again.  He says that he can take a hint!

PS: One feature I'd like to see on both platforms is active glide ratio. I had this on an early App many years ago, but I can't remember which one and can't find it.

It looked at your GPS ground speed and altitude loss to arrive at the glide ratio. It seemed to be accurate. In the event of an engine failure, and I have had four in my 8,000 hours, you could manipulate pitch for the best glide range. This should be a simple feature to add to any platform. I believe I added thos to the IFLY wish list way back when I first got the APP.

The older app mentioned was the Anyway Map app from around year 2000.  I had it in my 310 for years and the green circles for the active glide ratio were very accurate.  If it was coded 20 years ago, it should be much easier today assuming IFly has enough memory.

This old brain finally came up with the source of the active glide ratio I had mentioned on a previous post. It was on an old Garmin portable GPS with small black and white screen. This was over10 years ago.

I finally scrapped it when it crapped out on me.

I could begin my engine off glide and while observing the glide ratio on the screen I could adjust pitch to get the best ratio.

I really miss having that feature.

IFLY and Foreflight give estimates of your glide range. Some even compensate for terrain and winds, but the glide ratio you entered for your plane can vary depending on weight and winds, For instance I have read that you increase glide speed in a head wind and reduce speed in a tail wind. So many variables.

The active glide ratio just lests you know when your are at the best speed no matter the variables.

Stay safe everyone...

Oo!  Excellent!  I LIKE that one! I've had several other GPS apps with a glide ring (Garmin Pilot is one) but none that tell you the glide ratio numerically. That would be very nice--and, as John said, very useful.

Dick:

The app glide ratio to which I was referring didn't provide glide circles on the screen. I just showed the current glide ratio, i.e. 10:1....7:1 etc.

It was provided on my 1st Garmin Pilot which was a tiny device that I placed on my glare shield. t had a 3 inch black and white screen, but was easy to see.

Both my Dynon D10 and IFLY show GPS altitude and ground speed which is all you need to get the glide ratio.

I have contacted Dynon to see if they could offer it, but demand will determine whether it get any attention whether it be Dynon or IFLY.

In the interim I have been experimenting with the AOA on my Dynon to see if I can find best glide by referring to the AOA graph on my Dynon.
