I am guessing that some of the IFLY responders never use Flight Following since thay wouldn't want to hear the controller's traffic warning "screaming" in their ears....

I use flight following nearly all the time.  I don't recall ever having a controller "screaming" in my ears.  While I don't always find the traffic they have called, they stop calling it if I report it in sight, further they will resume if I report losing sight, and traffic is still a threat.  Further a controller will issue traffic on a target that has no Mode C altitude displayed, and/or no ADSB.

iFly, on the other hand has, as observed by me and a number of other people on here, categorized a lot more aircraft as a RED threat than we felt was necessary.  This isn't a complaint about iFly as I, and I suspect they, understand that iFly doesn't have AI anywhere near the Actual Intelligence that a controller has.  This means that we feel that iFly, as it's currently configured/proogrammed would be issuing far more traffic alerts, many would not be actual threats, some actual threats may be missed (such as those aircraft with no Mode C/ADSB).  By having iFly "cry wolf" so often we likely would begin ignoring it completely making the use of this feature relatively uselss.  I haven't used any of the other applications that have been mentioned here, but it's hard to believe any of them are as good as an actual controller, especially where No Transponder, No Mode C, and/or No ADSB are concerned.

I don't have iFly wired into my headset, so I don't really care if they have this feature or not, but there are a number of other features I'd like to see before this one.

Mike:

I used the term "screaming" as that is what another forum user said he didn't want IFLY "screaming" traffic in his headset.

I also used flight following and had troube finding some of the reported targets, but would rather be looking than to be oblivious as to traffic.

I liked that passengers also could hear the warning and kept their eyes peeled for traffic.

This has all become a moot point since I now have Foreflight and have what I have been asking for for over a year. Many don't see the need. I did.

Any help in preventing another midair is greatly appreciated.

I have kept my IFLY subscription active and am noting comparrisons between the two apps.

Hey, John, I'd completely forgotten that you survived a mid-air. No wonder you've been agitating for vocal "traffic" alerts in iFly! Nobody who hasn't had that experience has a right to be impatient with you.

Please do let us know how iFly and ForeFlight compare generally as you see them. (In that, it would be helpful to let us know about yourself, too, so we can understand what's important to you.

It would also help for an apples-to-apples comparison if you gave a comparison of the cost of an iPad vs Android tablet, and how much ForeFlight charges (including what I understand is an additional charge for synthetic vison).  And can an iPad drive an autopilot?

Thanks.

Don and HOOK:

The 8 inch Android I use with IFY is WiFi only and cost only $140 from COSTCO. The 8 inch Apple tablet cost over $400 and I had to get it with phone availabiity to get the on board GPS. WHEW! I have tried to stay away from apple products for that very reason.

The basic subscription is $99. I don't have synthetic vision.

As you have surmised, I am adamant on ocal warnings since this cat has no more lives left after surviving the midair.

Along with the smoke system and rear view mirrior to see up and behind the voice alerts is icing on the cake.

All that said IFLY has served well for these many years and it would still be my go to APP had it had voice alerts.

It will also be nice to have flight logging.

However, it would not be appropriate for me to advertize Foreflight features on an IFLY forum. You Tube has all you need to determine these festures. So the comparisons I will be doing will remain personal.

PS: One feature I'd like to see on both platforms is active glide ratio. I had this on an early App many years ago, but I can't remember which one and can't find it.

It looked at your GPS ground speed and altitude loss to arrive at the glide ratio. It seemed to be accurate. In the event of an engine failure, and I have had four in my 8,000 hours, you could manipulate pitch for the best glide range. This should be a simple feature to add to any platform. I believe I added thos to the IFLY wish list way back when I first got the APP.
