I found a number of Flight Planners that do do a GPX file export. Some of them range in price from costly to very expensive (however, this range is relative....it depends on how deep your pockets are). AOPA, FLYQ, FliteSoft (I used them for about 10 years - good stuff), and so on. I have yet to try Voyager 4 or DUATS.

I want free, I want simple VFR, and I want it to output GPX. That's not so much to ask.....is it?

I stumbled upon FlyLogical Flight Planner which is a world wide VFR flight planning online program that has its roots in Europe. But, much to my surprise ... it displays and uses US civil airports, private strips, glider ports plus it can use common Nav Aids such as VOR, NDB, as well as reporting points. You can add your own custom waypoints as well. The user interface is simple … but it does take a little getting used to. See the attached screen shot. Its a trip I'm doing tomorrow in my Pietenpol.

Bottom line: It's free. Its available across multiple platforms. It does VFR. It will email you a complete flight plan with METARS, NOTAMS, and all the necessary frequencies for your route.

FlyLogical will IMPORT and EXPORT GPX files very slick and very easy. Another cool feature is that when you save your flight plan – it gives you a URL for this plan. Check out

FlyLogical has Multi-Platform support

- Internet: http://www.flylogical.com

- Android http://flylogical.blogspot.com/p/emai...

- IPhone/IPAd: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/inavc...

It does not display sectionals/WACS/TACS etc. Its a simple Terrain map with the ability to overlay Google Maps. One fun fact is that FlyLogical's GPX will load into Google Earth … so you can see your trip in Google Earth.

I have yet to figure out how to modify performance data (customize it for my Pietenpol) or the fuel/distance data. But I am not interested in FlyLogical’s performance data – I use my IFly performance data – its been tweaked for the Piet.

However – just for fun, here’s the work-around

Convert Gallons to ukgal and ukgal/Hour:

http://calculator-converter.com/conve...

For my Piet – 13 gals = 10.8 ukgal & 4 GPH = 3.7 ukgal/hr

FlyLogical says my trip will take 64 min and use 3.9 gals. IFly says the trip will take 73 min and use 7 gals.

Try It. Let me know if you find something better.

Jim, thanks for staying with this to find a free way to download the GPX files. I had given up on finding something I could use easily and cheaply.

I have a question, about the output.

Once I have a GPX file, how do I load it to the iFly? I understand I can save it to a USB thumb drive and insert it in the iFly. But how do I load it from there? Also, is it possible to save it to the iFly's SD card and access it from there?

Hey Tom.

Turn on your IFLY.
Plug the Flashdrive into the USB port
Open Navigation
Click on the 'Flight Plans' button.

When that window opens - click on the LOAD button.
IFly will read the files on your USB Flashdrive and display them to you as /USB/filename.GPX

Choose the one you want.

IFly will load it into the Nav window.

You are on your way! Have Fun!!

Thanks Jim.

One more question. Do I need to leave the flashdrive in the iFly while using the route or can I just go ahead and save it to the iFly?
