This past weekend I flew for the first time with the 7.0.16 and the Navworx ADS-B tranceiver. I have attempted this before with earlier software and met with limited results. But the major bugs have been quashed, and it all worked like a charm.

High points:

  • The CDTI style traffic representation is great
  • I was even able to receive data on the ground (at KEDU). In fact, we could actually see aircraft in the patterm.
  • Connection information made it easy to see weather information flowing, and the alert text area made it easy to see traffic information flowing.

Issues:

  • Traffic messages are not prioritized [properly.] The biggest threat should be shown first. It seems instead to be prioritized by the order the messages are received.
  • The horizontal/vertical speed/track need to be calculated into the threat coloring
  • It is hard to see the targets, they are a bit too small. I guess that would be OK once the threat level stuff is a bit better, as I notice the higher threat targets are larger.
  • I received winds aloft.. but the system does not display it. Unclear why that would be the case. The same goes for PIREPS, although the latter might have to do with my location.

At any rate, the combo of the ADS-600B and the Navworx unit seems like it is going to be worth every penny. Thanks for a great system.

Regards,
Neal

Hi, Neal,

Could you detail for us your set up with the ADS-600B? I've been really pleased with my iFly700 for the past year, using Radenna's SkyRadar-S device for ADS-B, and been generally pleased, but with an eye to upgrading to ADS-B out eventually. The Navworx transceiver is looking like a good choice, but I've got questions:

If I locate the ADS-600B on the rack aft of the baggage compartment, what connections will it need to be fully functional? Power, of course, and at lease one blade antenna on the belly, but will it also need a top-side gps antenna? Does it require a second blade antenna below?

With your iFly720, I'm presuming it gets its data from the ADS-600B by wifi. Is that correct? Would you know if I can link my iFly700 to the ADS-600B with a USB cable? (I've been hoping to hear of an upgrade to the 700 that would enable a wifi dongle to be used with it.)

I'm glad you're enjoying that set up. If you can answer those questions, I'm sure I'm not the only interested party on the subject.

Of course, anyone reading is welcome to contribute what they know, too!

Go iFly !

Elliott

Elliot,

The complete install includes a GPS antenna topside and a UAT antenna on the belly. If you have a GNS-480 and you are not using all of the ARINC-429 ports then you can skip the GPS antenna and hook up to that. The 720 can connect with serial or WiFi.

Neal
