I thought it might help some others out, just in case.
The VMG, can also be further explaned by this scenario. If you fly a perfect circle around your waypoint, you would have a 0 VMG. Now if you fly a spiral, gradually getting closer to your waypoint, you would have a VMG value somewhere between 0 and your actual ground speed. Finally, if you are flying directly at, (bearing and track match), you shoud have a VMG that matches your ground speed.
