While the 740 does technically have an internal battery, it is not designed to allow normal usage for an extended period of time.  Rather, AP advertises it as a "Built-In Emergency Battery", which allows the device to be operated long enough that it can be transferred to another power source if the primary source fails.  For example, if its current power source fails (ships power goes offline, or the external battery it's plugged into goes dead) then you have a couple of minutes to grab a spare external battery out of your flight bag, unwrap the cord for it, and plug it into the iFly.

I'm not very familiar with the 5xx device (no longer listed for sale), but I think it was the only iFly device that's ever been offered with an internal battery that was intended to be the primary power supply for the device in normal use.

Cobra is right, as usual. with regards to the 740b battery life, it should be 15-20 minutes tops for battery life. It's supposed to help you get back down if there is some kind of electrical hiccup. However, the non-charging overnight is a little concerning. Has it charged since?

If you feel brave, you can replace the internal battery with a slightly larger one.  I used this one from Amazon: YDL 3.7V 2000mAh 654065 Lipo battery Rechargeable Lithium Polymer ion Battery Pack with JST Connector

If I remember correctly, I had to re-use the plug from the existing battery, and had to modify the plastic parts surrounding the battery due to the size difference.

This will obviously void any warranty, etc, etc.

You're not wrong but I want to STRONGLY caution any of yall that doing this would void any warranty on your unit and could end up completely "bricking" it if the voltage/amps are wrong. These batteries are tested to ensure that there is zero safety hazards when in use, but if you install a different battery we can't guarantee that same level of safety or performance.

Do so at your own risk!

I've considered voiding my 740's warranty that way, too. What bothers me about my battery is that it's essentially discharged every time I boot up the 740: the Battery Instrument says so. By the end of a typical flight, the same Instrument says it's fully charged. Does that mean the battery has timed out, or won't run the 740 long enough to find a place to land?

My 740 runs pretty warm--and a Kill A Watt says the 740 plus the iFly 120 V charger together draw 12 watts with the screen brightness turned up all the way. (A standard coffee mug warmer draws about 10 watts.) That would run a battery down fairly quickly, but I don't understand why it would discharge when the 740 is powered off.

This is interesting. I've had my 740 for a while and never was aware it had an internal battery. It has never seemed to charge up.

Do I need to leave it plugged into 12 volts while turned off to charge?. It normally remains in the plane with power off. I do turn off the 740 manually before I kill the master.
