I second this original request, no matter what kill joy Tim Taylor might think. These are all aids to the principle fundamental practice. Why then not react to all the visiual aids Ifly provides, they can get you killed even faster.

Please eliminate the insults and personal attacks. Are you an instrument rated pilot? If you are, you know and understand the issue.

I happen to agree with the quote you quoted Tim.  You've been a 'little harsh' in your responses.  Maybe you see it as a personal insult because it was about you.  I saw it as a observation.

Tim, it might just be that the blanket "emphatically stating it is illegal and dangerous to use non-certified devices for IFR flight?" Is too emphatic and states a personal viewpoint which is arguably incorrect. Or at least partially in incorrect. As you point out, we do use an EFB (and other non certified equipment) for IFR flight, both legally and to enhance safety. The charts are completely legal and the bells and whistles provided to enhance situational awareness, IMO, enhance flight safety. The suggested callouts are situational awareness items, not primary navigation tools.

As my comments indicate, I share your concerns about an  "minimums" callout at minimums, but because I think it does not provide a situational awareness benefit unless a whole bunch of variable conditions need to be addressed and, without them, has too much potential be be dangerous. But that's my opinion on the merits of the specific feature, not some blanket overall idea that EFB are illegal to use in IFR  flight.

I think ADS-B weather is a great safety enhancement, but if used tactically rather than strategically, it will kill you. I guess one might argue that it should not be allowed on an EFB for IFR flight. Do you feel that way? I doubt that's the case - I mention it only to point out why others might think your blanket statement that it is illegal is harsh.

Nothing harsh about it. You can argue the merits. Name calling is uncalled for and against forum rules. iFly GPS is great for VFR flight. For IFR flight it should be used for electronic charts and situational awareness, not for visual or audible alerts while making IFR approaches in IMC. That violates FAR's and is dangerous.

Agree about name calling. Agree to disagree that altitude callouts to assist with situatioal awareness would be an FAR violation. A bad idea, difficcult to effectively implement, but not a violation.

I'm not sure exactly what the altitude call outs would be.  However, I would agree with Tim in that I don't think iFly should be able to call out what altitude it THINKS the aircraft is at.  I could see it announcing something like: " Next fix XXXXX, crossing altitude 5000"  That is factual, from the charts, and helpful to the pilot.  Using it to tell the pilot when the aircraft has reached DH, MDA, etc.  Is asking for trouble.  There are at several different "altitudes" iFly might think you're at based on how the user has set up their unit.  I would imagine that if the wrong one were put in, you could find yourself quite a bit below the DH, MDA, etc. at the callout.  Even if it called out high, it may make you miss the approach and spend another half hour flying in the soup when you could have landed and been in the FBO had the callout been a bit lower.

This whole discussion may be moot anyway.  Doesn't iFly cease altitude reporting on the descent at some point (500AGL?) ? It would seem if the DH, MDA, etc. were below that  you'd never get the callout.
