So it's a weather guess for an area based on predictions for another area which are only somewhat reliable in most of the country.

Forecasting the weather is a guess.  The more information factored into the forecast, the better, unless you're someone who doesn't believe in science and data.

I think the MOS is better than the nothing we have otherwise. For instance, right now the airport 8 miles N of me is VFR, and the one 20 miles S is IFR. What and when is my weather getting better or worse?
