Sorry to return to this topic, but we are having "weather" up here in NYC, and the Nexrad depictions are making any underlying VFR/IFR (or TFR if there were any today) color shading a guessing game.

I am looking at KISP (my home airport), and the 5 mile radius around KISP has both green and yellow Nexrad returns. There is a 5-mile color area to depict whether KISP is under VFR/MFR/IFR flight rules, but the Nexrad overlay makes it impossible to figure out what the flight rules shaded color is right now (which is actually multi-color since the Nexrad return over KISP right now is partially green and partially yellow).

If VP Biden was at KISP today, with his 3 mile TFR tagging along, I suspect I would not see the TFR, and if I did, I don't know what color to look for given the flight rules and Nexrad overlays.

Sliding over to KILG, with the permanent temporary Biden TFR (by the way, I am not picking on Biden), there is no Nexrad returns, so I can see the red circle for the TFR inside the salmon shaded flight rules area. So, this works well when the TFR area is round. But that is not always the case, and the New Year's Eve TFR over Manhattan was over a non-standard shaped area over Manhattan, so the TFR border lines looked like other road lines in the Vector view, so the TFR did not stand out.

Maybe the easy fix for TFRs is to get rid of the road lines in the Vector view so that the TFR boarder lines stand out. Actually, I don't know that would be so easy. But there is still the issue of Nexrad returns rendering the flight rules shading a guessing game.

It may be almost too late to ask this,, but the New Years Eve New York City TFR is not displaying on iFly (Android version). It displays on other apps. I don't see configuration options for displaying TFRs, and I see the Biden TFR near KILG. Am I missing some configuration or is this TFR not available to iFly. Thanks, Dave

Same deal as last year...I don't see the New Year's Eve TFR over Manhattan...it goes active in about 8 hours. I have TFRs set for outline and shadow. Is there some option in iFly to not display a TFR until n-hours before it is active, or is there a non-user controlled iFly rule to not display a TFR until it is almost active? If so, where is that option; I can't find it among the menus or in the Product Manuals.

UPDATE: See next post.

-----------

I'm going to feel really stupid in a moment. I went to iFly to see this for myself. I downloaded the proper Sectionals for NYC. I don't see a TFR there at all. I checked the FAA's TFR Map website. I see the DC TFR and, if I zoom in enough, Biden's TFR. But I don't see anything for NYC. And someone says ...

Hmm. some digging into the FAA's Defense Internet NOTAM Service (DINS) [http://www.notams.faa.gov/dinsQueryWeb/] and clicking on ARTCC TFR's, then going to KZNY brought up a textual description of what is probably the TFR. But when I clicked "Map it," here's what I got:

Says "No Plain Text." And there's no map. Perhaps everyone is off early today in the govt and no one to work on it? I know that, as pilots, we're responsible to know EVERYTHING about a flight. But finding the info on this one is proving to be very difficult.

Having said that, if other EFB apps are displaying this TFR, then it seems like iFly should too.

I checked again at 8:30 PM EST (the TFR became active at 7 PM), and it was displayed on iFly. It's all good.

I didn't check before 8:30, so I don't mean to imply that it didn't appear until an hour and a half after the TFR became active. But it was displayed, and I assume a couple hours before becoming active.

It looks like iFly does not display TFRs until x-hours before they are active. That's good and bad. There are times where I wouldn't want to see way in the future TFRs and there are times when I would want to, for example, when planning my flight from NY to Fla. If there will be some TFRs tomorrow that iFly knows about today, I would like to see them when planning a flight. So, a user-controlled switch to see only current/future TFRs would be a nice addition. As I mentioned before, I could not find that switch under Settings, nor any mention of that switch in the Product Manuals....so I'm guessing it doesn't exist.
