"We've added a new Altitude AGL instrument. Now there is Altitude MSL and Altitude AGL."

This seems a bit misleading, if not dangerous. Unless you have pitot/static information and a current altimeter setting, the only altitude that can be provided (IIRC) is altitude above the WGS84 ellipsoid. So not "Altitude MSL" at all. In contrast I think the terrain databases have MSL altitude as their reference, right? For terrain warnings, the consequent errors are probably not significant because there is a large safety margin. Providing an AGL "instrument," however, is another matter. Terrain following while scud running or on an approach has little or no safety margin.

Comments? Am I not understanding something? Have you done any calculations to see what the error range in these "instruments" might be?

Hi Tinker,

We've done our best to ensure the safety of this feature. The terrain database we're using is based on the highest point in the grid - so if the resoltuion causes it to be off, it will be reporting high not low. Also we disable the readout if you are below 250' (it just says "LOW").

Thanks!
Walter

(For clarity...what I mean is the Terrain database may be "high". The AGL instrument may report false-low values if you are, for example, right next to a montain peak...but it won't report false-low)

Well, it's your product. You get to decide. I would be worried about the aeronautical equivalent of those stores you read where someone drives right off the ferry dock into the water while following the GPS' instructions. But even a radar altimeter has the "nearby mountain" problem.

BTW, congrats on the Android app. I have just switched from GP. I would have guessed that iFly would be road kill from the tablet stampede so it is nice to see you show up with an app that (IMHO) has a real chance to be the dominant Android EFB. AFIK ForeFlight is continuing to ignore Android as a matter of policy and after a year I know that Garmin is not investing to bring their Android product up to the level of their iThings product. So the way is open.

I think this is somewhat of a moot point. IFly GPS is not legal for IFR flight and VFR flight rules still pertain. There are acknowledgements of this that we all agree to when we use this app.
