You might try seeing if the loss of GPS lock happens when you're on a particular comm freq. Spurs from the LO in the comm receiver could be finding their way out the comm antenna and back into the GPS antenna. Only takes a very small signal to disrupt the GPS since they're so close together. Common problem, like cell phones and Bluetooth. Another thing to try is to turn off all other RF equipment, even any form of a receiver, and see it the GPS recovers. If it does, turn them back on one at a time until you find the culprit. Don't run into anything while you're doing all this!

As for a mount in the space of the Lowrance 2000, I have an opinion that works for me. I have a Lowrance 2000 in my Zenith 801. Because of the same reasons you stated of not being able to upgrade, I switched to an I-fly 720 because of space, not realizing I would get so much more with the I-fly than a "replacement GPS." Gerrrrr. My KGCM airport is on property that used to belong to the Lowrance family near Tulsa until they donated it for an airport in 1995, can you understand why that really frosts me that I can not update my Lowrance 2000? I guess all you can say is "there seems to be more money in fishing than flying" OK, I pre-ordered the Air-Gizmo mount for the I-fly 720 knowing I would have to do some cutting and make a bezel. While I was waiting on delivery I took some Black Velcro that came in long 36 inch strips from a fabric store and mounted some on the side bezels of the 2000 and on the back of the I-fly. I found that to be a very handy way to mount the 720. Occasionally I need to peal the I-fly off to put on top of the panel to get an initial GPS lock (internal antenna only) or take it with me in my Cherokee 235. Used the 720 returning on a 4 hour flight today. I have a Garmin 430 for the autopilot, I-fly 720 to see what is really going on. If you decide to do this, be sure to put the hook side on the Lowrance 2000 and the soft side on the Ifly. I still have the Air-Gizmo in the box from when they finally shipped it to me, too late to return it. I most likely will never take the time and trouble to install it in my panel. I would definitely use it in a new install, but not something I will be doing as a re-ferb.

Installed the 720 with the panel dock. Only took just a bit of dremel work then working in some screws. I think it looks pretty good on the center of the panel. ;o)

Sweet, I love my iFly 720 mounted in the center stack. I also popped a few holes and mounted the AirGizmo Dock in and it fits like a glove in my 172. She's an older VFR bird so the panel is very simple. New PM-3000 Stereo Intercom is going in at the top next. Can't wait.
