720 i n the backseat of an RV8

I just installed my new 720 in the backseat of my 8. It's on the back of the seat kind of under the roll bar. It's unusable there because the GPS won't get a lock at all. My wife held it out from under the bar and it would still not lock on. When she took it out of the RAM mount it would acquire the signal but whenever she put it behind the seat it dropped the signal.

When I first got it I powered it up in one of my windows and after about 30 minutes it would not lock on. I had to go outside to get it to lock and it still took about 5 minutes.

Ive read about folks mounting them in panels etc, with no problems. Has anyone mounted one in the back of an 8 and had it work without the external puck. I don't mind getting one, but everyone touts how good they lck on and mine really struggles.

Mine works well mounted on the yoke of both my Grumman AA-1B as well as my Cessna 182. But now with the Terrain feature, as well as other new features that have come out that need higher quantity signal to function 100%, I just bought a "puck" to play with. But only once that I recall the unit just suddenly lost lock, but that was due to a software glitch that forced me to reset the GPS.
My last two handheld GPSs had a common problem that when my Narco Mk-12D was tuned to certain nav frequencies, it would cause the GPS to loose lock. I have not seen that happen with the iFly. But you must have something that is interfering with the iFly in your plane and would be interesting to find out what that is. Might try rigging up a battery to power it separate of your electrical system as a test.

When I used my old 700 in the backseat of the -8A, it would work fine on my lap ----- however, when I mounted my new 720 on the panel of the -10, using velcro, I found I had to use the remote antenna on top of the glareshield to get a reliable signal. Try mounting the remote antenna, with the magnet, on top of the -8 rollbar and see what happens.

If I get another -8A, I intend to get another 720 to mount for the back seat ---- let us know your experience.

I flew in Jerry's back seat with my 720 in landscape mode, and it had NO signal. I held it above the front seat back on the roll bar and of course it had full signal. There is something about that seat back that must suck the GPS signal up. At least we know it is a bad location as it has shown up with two different units.
