OK Gents,

First off, we appreciate all the warnings about not flying VFR in IMC...we are all pilots - let's trust each other's judgment before we start questioning it! Peace my brothers!

Back to the topic...

I just took the advice to purchase the AHRS hardware add-on for STRATUX and it arrived last night.

I went to Utube to understand how to install it...looks simple enough, however, in the video, the kit came with a new chip that had all the AHRS software loaded onto it.

The only thing I received (and thought I needed) was the hardware to install on the board.

I am not a computer programmer and do not have a card reader to pull the tiny stratux card for an update - is there anything I can do now? Or, am I stuck with the hardware and no software. Yep, I realize (now) this is my fault for not specifically ASKING about this.

The $16 is not the disappointment - I would have paid more for the chip with the program already on it if that were an option.

Should I just try to find a new chip with all the AHRS software on it and purchase it?  (I can always use the one I have as a backup and keep it in my flightbag)

Thanks just the same! Mike

First, just like iFly itself, the Stratux software is regularly updated to add features and functionality, remove bungs, and generally become better and more stable. A card reader is the primary way to update the software - it is, after all, a DIY project - and does not take programing skills. It's about as easy, with good step-by-step directions, as what you have done already. There are other ways. For example, the developers of Aerovie EFB added a Stratus update routine to their software: it checks for Stratux updates, optionally downloads them and, next time yo connect to Stratus, asks if you want to apply it. Perhaps iFly will do the same.

Second, if you have a computer built in the past 10 years, chances are you do have a card reader. What model do you have? I'd be happy to check for you.

Mark,

I have an "HP Envy" I bought in 2017.

I am sure I would have to buy some type of card reader adaptor to get that tiny chip in position to read/write to "see" it through a USB port.

I appreciate all the fantastic work done on this amazing program - I just wish MY programming skills were better to keep up with it. I am willing to learn.

I'd be very surprised if your Envy didn't have an Digital Card slot. Those cards are used in phones, cameras, etc, and people move files around using them all the time. It's pretty much standard. Pull out your manual and look for a reference to a Digital Card. The profile views of the laptop in it will show where it is on yours. Look for a 1" wide, vertically narrow slot. Pretty sure the Envy series has a card reader. The location can vary a bit, but it is going to be a 1"wide narrow slot in the front bottom or one of the two sides.  Like in this HP Envy (it's the slot on the right; mine is on a different side; sometimes its in the front). It's larger than your card, but just about any time one buys one of those Micro cards, it comes with an adapter card (the other photo).
