I took the plunge and bought the Radena Skyradar for my ifly720. After wrestling with getting power to it from my panel, the unit sprang to life and was connected to my 720 with little problem.

I was a little concerned about where to mount the receiver so that it would get a good signal, but in the end, I put it on top of my battery box in the floor of the cockpit (RV6), and fed the Radena GPS through a hole running to my dash. With the chassis mounted ADSB and Network antennas, I have no problem getting signals almost immediately on power up from inside of my metal roof hangar. I'm pretty sure I won't miss the Sagetech since I will probably be purchasing a different AHRS anyhow.

During the course of my brief shakedown flight, I did note a few items that could improve the weather related items being displayed. I do suspect that v7.5 might address some of these items. I'm not running the beta versions.:

1. I really would like to see the weather overlayed on top of the other screens such as the sectional charts, approach plates, vector maps, etc.... I know this might obscure the display, but would like the option. Is there a way to use transparency for the weather overlay?

2. The vector that indicates wind direction could also indicate speed if flags were added to the vector (5 knots, 10, 20, 30 knots, etc).

3. Shade the reporting stations by current conditions (VFR, Marginal VFR, IFR, Low IFR). This would allow for a quick analysis of the big weather picture without selecting the metars one at a time and building the picture in my head. This is one of my favorite tools from the aviationweather web page -- something similiar in the air would be really useful.

4. The default information selected for the Weather Reports (when I tap the screen) should be sticky. Once I pick METAR option, it should always display METAR info first unless I change it again.

5. Can we get an instrument that shows ADSB status? something that would indicate age of the last weather update, and current link status with the receiver?

In all, I *do* like the 720 a lot. Thanks for all of the hard work you've put into it! I don't miss my previous GPS navigation software at all!

Don,

Congratulations on your new SkyRadar... As for your below details, I've added some comments and responses to them.

1. I really would like to see the weather overlay on top of the other screens such as the sectional charts, approach plates, vector maps, etc.... I know this might obscure the display, but would like the option. Is there a way to use transparency for the weather overlay? This is something we are looking into... The concern is to keep the NEXRAD uncluttered as In populated areas of the sectional, the yellows can blend. We will look further into this.

2. The vector that indicates wind direction could also indicate speed if flags were added to the vector (5 knots, 10, 20, 30 knots, etc). I've added this to the wishlist. It would be nice to have the intensity flags or feathers.

We actually do currently shade the reporting station with the respective colors and status. If you zoom out, the VFR's will go away and leave the MIFR and IFR's visible.

4. The default information selected for the Weather Reports (when I tap the screen) should be sticky. Once I pick METAR option, it should always display METAR info first unless I change it again. This is the way the current software versions work. Make sure you update to the latest version. If your last view (Metar) is sticky, then next sstation you touch should pop to Metar.

5. Can we get an instrument that shows ADSB status? something that would indicate age of the last weather update, and current link status with the receiver? This has been addressed in the next version. In 7.0.20, ADS-B status can be check by touching Weather Mode and you should see ADS-B Weather. Will have added a ADS-B time stamp and ADS-B alert to the Active Alert in V7 as well.

Thanks for the great feedback. Some of your comments have been resolved and some are addressed in the next update. As for the Wishlist items, I'll make sure they are reviewed and we get back. Weather is such an important feature, we definitely want to continue to improve it. Thanks again.

I updated to 7.0.20 last night. It looks like the weather information is "sticky" until the unit is powered down. On the next power up, it goes back to the default TAF setting. Any chance this can be a retained setting?

I'll look into this with Walter. I know if the Metar data is out of date, 6 hours old, it will drop, therefor reverting to the TAF data which is valid for 24 hours. If you are doing an update with WX and selecting Metar, then powering off or exiting the Navi program, and upon coming back it goes to TAF. That might be a bug, depending on how Walter has this configured. I believe it should stick to Metar provided there is valid data there. I'll report back shortly.

You've described exactly what I have observed. Update, select METAR, navigate, power down, power up. Reverts back to TAF.

Thanks!
