Which reminds me: How do we know that a new update is ready for the hardware iFly without driving to the airport and turning it on? That's probably a stupid question, but I really don't know the answer.

We announced on the forum initially, and of course this will be touted in our next monthly newsletter.

I've made several flights low over rivers with the newest update in both 740 and iPhone and can say that splitting Obstacles off from Terrain is a great improvement.
What I'd like now is a way to declare specific user waypoints as obstacles, so that uncharted wires and other such hazards will appear as obstacles in iFly.
There are many, MANY uncharted wires across rivers and lakes. They're uncharted because they're low--down where seaplanes takeoff and land--and they're almost never marked with balls or anything else. In most lighting conditions, they're invisible.
Many of us set a GPS waypoint when we discover a wire, and we often share the coordinates with other seaplane pilots. How much better it would be for those waypoints to show up as hazards in iFly!
