The point is that there is no good way to get accurate wind speeds automatically. There are ways to approximate wind speeds automatically (by using ADSB-acquired winds aloft data near your flight path), with the potential for significant unknown errors as you mentioned yourself, and there are ways to get better accuracy that require manual user input (either by punching in numbers or by flying specified paths), which are subject to "garbage in, garbage out" (data entry error or poor flying precision).

Even if the user goes through the trouble of flying a precise, level, 2-minute circle for the device to calculate winds with decent accuracy, then they only get the wind information for that particular point in their flight. 15 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour later, the winds could be significantly different.

It's not a trivial problem to solve, and any potential solution is going to have limitations. By "limitations", I mean that the user may end up thinking he has good wind information when he really doesn't, and could make bad decisions based on it.

That's not a feature...that's a trap.

We do have a feature coming soon that will help this: We're downloading high resolution Winds Aloft data (current and forecast) from NOAA. Now we're coding up the iFly to use this data in flight planning, and in flight. More to come on this.
