It would sure be nice to have lightning strike data as a layer on the weather map. The prime advantage would be that this information is available nearly instantaneously, while Nexrad images can be several minutes old. Of course, there would be no access to that data stream while aloft, (at least, not for me) since it's not included in the ads-b stream. But since lightning strikes pretty reliably mark the location of thunderstorms, it could sure make for a more informed launch decision!

I'm talking about the data stream used by this site: http://www.lightningmaps.org/realtime?lang=en

I would not want current ADS-B Nexrad (as current as it is) and obsolete lightning data displayed on the same screen.

That's easy to prevent, simply don't show any data over (X) minutes old. Besides, the age of weather data should always be clearly indicated on the screen.

My point is that, if available, lightning data has the potential to be far more current than Nexrad images.

Or make lightning strikes a layer you could choose or not.

To me anyhow, the word "layer" implies the ability to turn on or off, or otherwise control, the mix of data overlaid on a display.
