Yes, I know it's not necessarily an either/or choice ... but at least in terms of primary GPS it still is .
And for the many who lack the budget for both, or lack the space for both it is an either/or choice.

So it would be nice to see a matrix comparing feature by feature the dedicated 720 and the iPad version of iFly

Alex,

At this time it would be very temporary and incomplete to build a comparison chart as we are in a short transitional period. We've build a Universal Program that will allow us to essentially maintain a single code base for the iFly dedicated devices, iPad and Android versions.

In the very near future the only feature differences will be determined by the tablet itself. Things like Capacitive Screen vs Resistive, Pinch Zooming, Internal GPS or not, NMEA Output via USB, etc.

We'll keep an eye on this. Thanks for the feedback.

Hi Shane,

Thanks for the quick and to-the-point response.
I think I understand that you're saying the feature sets are converging so rapidly that the table I was asking for would be obsolete soon.

But I may have been thinking not just of specific functional features but also higher level characteristics that are stem from the nature of the difference of the hardware platforms and their underlaying operating systems.

I know some of these have be often discussed here ... and possibly in reviews elsewhere. But could be nice and useful .. and good marketing(?) to have those simplified in a quasi table format.
Sort of a more or less objective "characteristics" review in table form?

For example:

Dedicated Other platforms
Requires 12 volt* power Run up to easily ~5 +hours on internal battery
Very bright screen Marginal screen brightness in some situation.
virually bulletproof singleaa function OS Very reliable OS, but as multi app use a bit more problem prone
Hardware, OS, and GPS Don't expect apple to know sh*t about supporting ifFy or iFly to fix your ipad ;-)
all well supported by
Adventure Pilot.
(no finger pointing.)
Easily mounted in crowded cockpits Can be difficult to mount expecially in small cockpits.
in multiple locations.
Decent screen size Screens larger than all but cost-is-no-object class of GPS's
Dedicated inputs for X, Y, Z Limited input via bluetooth for W, X.
Dedicated output ports for A, B, C. Dedicated output for sound, some bluetooth output for A, C.
Can get second device subscription Same? (Can purchasor of iPad subscription add 720 for $20 per year??)
for only $20 per year.

I may not have got that all correct, for sure incomple , and some of those left right contrasts may be partly subjective,
but perhaps my idea makes sense for an "at a glance" comparision in place of rambling 2000 word reviews?

As for the more specific feature sets table:
Even if it converges to all the rows reading almost the same left to right, nice to see the full feature set and maybe put a similarly priced popular aviation GPS way out in the right hand column?

Alex
