The current beta shows a suggested runway based on current wind direction if you click on an airport on the map.  [Only for airports with METAR data.]  It also provides a "Rnwy" button next to that.  If you click on it, it shows a bunch of stuff related to runways: runway diagram, pattern altitude, current wind and direction; then for each runway it shows the runway number in a green or red box (headwind or tailwind), what the length and width and surface type is, and more to the point -- what the headwind and crosswind speeds are.  Very nice.

Thanks Hook!

Definitally a step in the right direction.

Still, back to my original pitch... if I'm on final I'd love to get the crosswind compoent in my ears or in my face (be it from the ASOS, or iFly, without having to click and drill down through menus... which no one wants to be doing on final approach. ;-)

The time to know the cross-wind component is when you are deciding which runway to use and if the cross-wind component exceeds that of your airplane or your own ability to handle it.

Hi Mike,

You wrote "However, using the image posted above, there are 8 possible crosswind components to calculate." You have a point that I admit I didn't fully think of when it comes to the ATIS or AWAS broadcast report. Yet even there, it would only need to calculate and report it for the upwind/approach direction for each runway (reasonable assumption being no-one's going to be landing with a tailwind) and so in a two runway airport only two numbers: For example "Runway 29 crosswind component 9 knots from the right. Runway 36 crosswind component is 23 knots from the right."

And my original request/wish was/is to have iFly do the crosswind calculation on final approach. Since it knows which runway you're lining up on it only has to calculate and give you the crosswind component for one runway.

See how much better things would be if I were in charge? wink

Alex

iFly does provide these numbers for you.  Click on an airport to get the QuickView (QV) box.  It presents you with the optimal runway number and a blue arrow showing the (total) wind relative to that runway.  Press on the large gray button just to the left of that that says "Rwy".  That will show you all the runways, and all wind components for all of them, including crosswind.
